One Less Violent Offender on the Streets
For Immediate Release 4/13/2016
Steven “Sandman” Melton was found guilty of several counts related to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, wear-carry transport of a handgun, and prohibited possession of ammunition.
Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Daniels successfully prosecuted this case.
On September 20, 2014, a Baltimore Police officer on patrol in the 5300 block of Denmore Avenue observed Melton in a “hand to hand” transaction. When the officer approached the defendant to conduct a field interview, Melton fled.
The police officer chasing Melton noticed he was holding his waistband while running. The fleeing defendant attempted to jump a fence but fell. Melton got up and tried to locate something on the ground, but as the officer got closer he took off running again. Other officers arrived at the scene and located a Rossi .38 revolver in the grass; officers also found marijuana in the defendant’s pockets
“This is one less gun, and one less criminal on the streets of Baltimore,” said State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. “Every time we remove illegal firearms off our streets we make our city safer.”
